The Impactful Film: Mastering Video Techniques to Create Unique, Short Films
Limited Capacity full

Do you want to engage an audience and hold their attention while you take them through a short story about your family? Do you want to learn how to utilize storytelling and be able to get your point across in less than 2 minutes? Then this class is for you! While family films are great and such keepsakes, Catherine wants to teach and challenge you to be able to come up with a narrative and theme to shoot effectively and to tell a story in a 2 minute or less film. Catherine will take you step by step from pre-production to execution while shooting along with you in a lifestyle room setting. She will take you through her process on how to cut the "filler" and keep your film fast-moving and audience engaged. Join Catherine in experimenting and videoing with unique camera angles, and learn the process of her shooting style and how she uses these unique camera angles to enhance her storytelling. During the shoot, Catherine will explain basic rules of composition, light and the importance of not only multiple takes, but multiple angles. She will also go over basic camera movements that work with your story and not distract. Not only does this process help shooting be successful, it makes editing your sequence a breeze.
Lens preference: A medium prime (35-50mm) or a standard zoom (24-70mm) is preferred. Some basic experience in shooting video and stabilizing your camera is helpful, however the instructor will go over basic stabilization techniques for beginners.

Learning Objectives:

- Learn how to storyboard and get prepared to film their own narrative/theme
- Learn how to cut the "filler" b-roll and use only narrative rich clips that will enhance their story and keep their audience engaged
- Learn how to use music and audio to enhance their film- not distract
- Learn how to engage and direct their "talent" in order tell their narratives
- Learn different camera angles and in-camera movements/transitions that help deliver their story

Beyond Basic: The Video Edit that Stands Out
Limited Capacity seats available

Are you familiar with the basics of video editing and want to dig deeper into more creative edits? In this course, Catherine will show you, piece by piece, how she edits her videos in Final Cut Pro X. Not only will she break down the edit of her videos, she will explain why she chooses to edit it the way that she does. It isn't just important to learn how to add a cool effect, but to have reason, and justify the edit in order to be a better storyteller. Catherine will go over opening sequences that have visual impact, transitions, audio and sound effects to enhance your film, and touch on color grading as well. Catherine will take you through one of her previously completed films and dissect it so that you can see exactly how she edited it, as well as edit a 1 minute film from start to finish (Catherine will have clips filmed prior to class). You will not only walk away with a better understanding of how to cut together a creative video edit, but how to use those creative edits to become better storytellers within your own films.

Learning Objectives:

- Learn how to edit a film from start to finish in Final Cut Pro X
- Learn how, when and *why* to use advanced transitions between clips
- Learn the basics of color grading films
- Learn how to match audio with your clips, and how to add sound effects to enhance your storytelling
