An Introduction to Film Photography
Limited Capacity filling up

Want to learn all about film photography? In Kim's outdoor shooting demonstration at Piedmont Park, you will dive into all things film! You will learn about 35mm vs. medium format cameras, film types and characteristics, and how to rate and meter film for the correct exposure (and how it differs from digital). Kim will photograph a model family and demonstrate her tips and tricks while giving students a chance to shoot alongside her. She will answer the most important question - how to photograph a family when you don't have an LCD screen to see you're nailing the shots. Kim will take things one step further and go over the importance of choosing a creative partner, the film lab, to get the final look you want to achieve. Finally, she will give you a solid game plan to use moving forward to develop a strong foundation in film.

Learning Objectives:

- Learn what film gear they need for an outdoor family session
- Learn about film types and characteristics
- Learn how to accurately rate and meter their film for correct exposure
- Learn how to photograph a family on film using key poses, mental checklists, and nailing the shot without an LCD screen
- Learn how to choose a film lab, their creative partner, to get a consistent style

Please bring a film camera and film to this class. A light meter is recommended but optional.

View from Above: Flat Lay Styling for Products
Limited Capacity full

Knowing how to style and photograph scenes from above can elevate one's photography and open up opportunities for magazine work and content creation for brands. While some sets have various individuals in distinct roles (e.g., creative director, prop stylist, photographer), there are other situations where the photographer will be called upon to play all roles. Thus, having confidence in styling one's own images is key. Plus, photographers can use these types of images for their own client guides, websites, or social media pages. In this interactive session, Kimberly Murray will discuss and demonstrate the tools and techniques that make flat lay styling easier and how to use layering, color, and texture to create more dynamic images. In addition, she will discuss the importance of choosing the best backgrounds to set the scene and how to make or source them.

Learning Objectives:

- Learn key composition elements to create dynamic images
- Learn where to source backgrounds
- Learn how to create at least three different versions of images using the same props to get the most out of their styling session

A Family Walk: Improvising & Building your session as you Go

This walk will focus on a styled family in a park setting with a variety of backdrops/locations.This family will be casually dressed with at least three children to allow more shooting opportunities. This shootout will take a lifestyle approach but also capture traditional portraits as attendees explore and see what the walk brings them. The In- beTWEEN Years: Preserving Authenticity With Older Children
Limited Capacity filling up

Photographing small children seems to come easily. They’re happily unaware of our presence, and usually give us moments effortlessly. But as children grow older, their awareness of the lens can make capturing authentic moments more challenging. With each passing day, children grow older, wiser, and more independent.
During this hands-on shooting class we will delve into what intimacy with older children looks like. Through the stages of childhood and adolescence, their means of affection subtly change. While a 5 year old will unabashedly shower you with kisses, the 10 year old may reluctantly hug you, and the tween may briefly lay their head on your shoulder. Each stage can have it’s own love language and level of affection, and parents relish in whatever is handed out.
We will walk through step-by-step how to navigate sessions with older children, from pre-session questionnaires, to putting them at ease before and during shooting.
This hands-on class will reproduce an in-home setting, utilizing available light. Attendees are welcome to bring a flash as well, if time allows to cover fill flash. Lens preferences: 35mm Prime, or 24-70mm. Experience shooting in manual is preferred, but the instructor will call out settings to help assist beginners.

Learning Objectives:

- Learn how interact, disarm, and bond with older children and their families for authentic emotions
- Learn how to utilize window light during in-home sessions: Positioning subjects in relation to window for best light and composition
- Learn how to investigate family dynamics ahead of time via questionnaires, to best understand optimal poses and family dynamics
- Learn how to control and minimize mixed light during in-home sessions

Timeless Children's Portraiture

Join Meg Loeks as she demonstrates how to create classic children's portraiture that transcends time using the natural environment around you. This program will go in-depth on the power of color theory and styling. You will study the importance of color choices and texture. Lastly, learn how to gently lead your subject to good light while still capturing natural emotions and candid moments. A Family Walk: Improvising & Building Your Session as you Go
Limited Capacity filling up

One of the biggest tools in the photographer's toolbox is improvisation; how to work with unpredictable personalities, varying light, unexpected moments, and unknown scenery. This walk will focus on a styled family in a park setting with a variety of backdrops/locations.This family will be casually dressed with at least three children to allow more shooting opportunities. This shootout will take a lifestyle approach but also capture traditional portraits as attendees explore and see what the walk brings them. From learning how to guide clients on styling and how to engage with children and their varying personalities, to seeing how to improvise and find perfect spots even in unexpected places, Samantha will show you what she’s learned from doing thousands of family and commercial shoots over the years — that every session is different and that makes it so much more creative and fun.
Samantha will photograph the subjects but also give attendees the opportunity to shoot by rotating within groups and also breaking up the models for more access. Lighting, backgrounds and the subjects will guide this walk as you go from lifestyle, to detail, to portrait shots that results in a robust and powerful gallery. This styled shoot will include a guide on how to give styling advice to your client, some of Samantha’s favorite prompts, as well as some post processing tips in terms of presets and approach. For this class, please bring a prime or zoom lens with a focal length between 35-85mm.

Learning Objectives:

- Learn how to utilize the light and scenery at hand to create beautiful portraits
- Explore styling guidance and how to utilize blankets, hats and accessories for interest
- Learn how to set the tone and flow of a session to be fun and natural while making the use of every moment
- Find out how to read your client’s and especially the children’s moods and respond to bring out their best in the session

The In- beTWEEN Years: Preserving Authenticity With Older Children
Limited Capacity full

- Learn how to shoot to print magazine specifications to allow room for copy

Couples Posing Made Fun and Easy
Limited Capacity seats available

If you’ve ever struggled with posing couples, this is the class for you. During this session you will shoot alongside Bre as you photograph a real couple, in an outdoor setting, working through the flow of a real engagement session. The methods learned in this shoot along can be applied to any couple whether during a wedding, at an engagement shoot, or during a family session. Our goal is for every couple to leave the session feeling like they had a great time. How do we do this? Bre will show you how she connects with her clients through conversation, sets expectations, directs the posing, keeps things flowing, and creates an enjoyable experience for the couple.

Flip the Switch: Changing Your Lighting Scenario to Fit Your Flat Lay Needs
Limited Capacity seats available

It is often said that natural light is the "best" light to shoot since photographers can create beautiful images with soft, even light. But what if the light is either changing too quickly resulting in inconsistencies across images, is not ideal for one's creative vision, or is not available? In those instances, it might be time to consider using studio lighting to achieve similar results. Join Kimberly Murray as she discusses alternatives to natural light, specifically strobes, speedlights, and LEDs, and how to use them in overhead photography. In addition, she will demonstrate the placement of the light source, and how modifiers can be used to create different moods. This session will take place indoors. You should be familiar with shooting in manual mode.

Learning Objectives:

- Learn the benefits of artificial light
- Learn how different types of artificial light can be used either in place, of or alongside, natural light
